Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation
After a spinal cord injury (SCI), you will need SCI rehabilitation to optimize recovery and perhaps adapt to a new way of life. Our team of Physical and Occupational therapists, including a Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist, will work one-on-one with you every step of the way.
No two SCI are the same or have the exact set of symptoms. Each treatment and plan of care is customized to fit your individual needs and goals. These will depend on your level of injury, type of trauma, amount of time since your injury, etc.
The goal of SCI rehabilitation is to help the patient return to the highest level of function and independence possible, while improving their overall quality of life – physically, emotionally, and socially.
What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A SCI occurs when the spinal cord becomes damaged, and is most often caused when motor vehicle accidents, falls, acts of violence, and sporting accidents fracture vertebrae and crush or cut the spinal cord.
Vertebrae are the rings of bones that surround the spinal cord and make up the spinal column or back bone. The vertebrae are named according to their location in the spinal column. There are seven cervical (neck), twelve thoracic (back), five lumbar and five sacral (lower back) vertebrae.
Cervical spinal cord injuries usually cause loss of function in both the arms and legs, resulting in tetraplegia.
Thoracic spinal cord injuries usually affect the chest and the legs; and lumbar and sacral injuries affect the hips and legs, resulting in paraplegia.
Statistics show that every hour of every day, another person has a spinal cord injury.
According to the 2020 SCI Data Sheet from the National SCI Statistical Center (NSCISC):

The therapists were good with focusing on his goals. Forcing him to set goals and to reach them. They never stopped pushing him and when he didn’t think that he could, they reiterated that he could.
My daughter Asjah has made wonderful progress since attending physical and occupational at Community Sports and Therapy Center. Our family was not prepared for the need of therapy and had no clue what to expect. Community Sports and Therapy Center has went above and beyond what we would have imagined in Asjah’s recovery.
After Asjah’s spinal cord injury in June 2020 we stayed weeks between ICU then inpatient therapy in Columbus. Not being familiar with spinal cord injuries we were thinking we had to take her to a big therapy center to get the best possible rehab. Community Sports and Therapy Center has proven that is not true … the therapy she receives now is beyond what we were told Asjah would be able to do.
Our family feels blessed to have such an amazing outpatient clinic so close to home.
Our clinic is unique in that we are one of the few locations in the entire state of Ohio to offer the ReWalk™ Rehabilitation system. While not every spinal cord injury qualifies or is able to utilize the ReWalk system this is state-of-the-art technology that you will not find anywhere else locally.
